Award-Winning Animated Comedy Lesbian Space Princess Lands in UK & Irish Cinemas This June

London, 4 June – Peccadillo Pictures has announced that the acclaimed animated feature Lesbian Space Princess will open in cinemas across the UK and Ireland from 19 June.
Following a successful festival run, the film arrives with significant international recognition. Lesbian Space Princess celebrated its world premiere at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Teddy Award, one of the world’s most prominent honours celebrating LGBTQ+ cinema. The film also captured the Audience Award for Best Australian Feature at the Sydney Film Festival.
Created by South Australian writer-director duo Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs, Lesbian Space Princess is a vibrant, laugh-out-loud animated adventure that combines sci-fi, comedy and queer storytelling.
The story follows Princess Saira, the introverted daughter of the flamboyant lesbian queens of Planet Clitopolis. When her bounty-hunter girlfriend Kiki unexpectedly breaks up with her for being too needy, Saira’s world is turned upside down. Matters become even more complicated when Kiki is kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens, a group of forgotten future incels demanding an unusual ransom: Saira’s royal labrys, the most powerful weapon known to lesbian kind.
With only 24 hours to retrieve the missing weapon and rescue Kiki, Saira embarks on an inter-gay-lactic journey that pushes her far beyond the safety of queer space. Along the way, she encounters a troublesome spaceship, forms an unlikely friendship with runaway gay-pop star Willow, and discovers strengths she never knew she possessed.
Bursting with colour, humour and heart, Lesbian Space Princess delivers a unique animated experience that celebrates LGBTQIA+ representation and culturally diverse voices both on-screen and behind the scenes. The film blends sharp comedy with themes of self-discovery, identity and belonging, creating an adventure that is as emotionally resonant as it is entertaining.
The voice cast features an impressive lineup of Australian screen talent, including Shabana Azeez (Birdeater, The Pitt), Bernie Van Tiel (Class of 07, Swift Street), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High, Ladies in Black), comedy collective Aunty Donna, Richard Roxburgh (Rake, Elvis, Van Helsing), Jordan Raskopoulos, Madeleine Sami (Deadloch, The Breaker Upperers) and Kween Kong, known from RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under.
Combining irreverent humour, dazzling animation and a celebration of queer identity, Lesbian Space Princess is set to be one of the most distinctive animated releases of the year when it arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on 19 June.
