Upsizing Your Tyres? Here’s What You Need to Know

Smaller tyres wear out more quickly, don’t they? After all, for each mile they drive, the tyre is rotating so many more times than a bigger tyre?

Upsizing Your Tyres Here’s What You Need to Know

Therefore, to save money by replacing your tyres less often, it is only common sense to buy bigger tyres for your car? Or is it? Let’s have a look at upsizing tyres and what you need to be aware of before you go ahead and contact Eco Tyres which has an extensive range of good quality cheap tyres in Stevenage to fit every kind of budget. Broadly speaking, there are two ways to upsize. The first way of upsizing is simply swapping your tyres for wider tyres. This means that your sidewall and tyre height will remain the same, but your contact area will be bigger because of the increased surface area. This will give you more friction, so your tyres will grip better and feel more stable on the roads. Consult your mechanic before making the change to wider tyres, so they can best advise you on the pros and cons of various widths, but otherwise this should be a relatively simple process. The second way of upsizing involves changing your whole wheel, along with the associated tyres, and this can present you with some problems unless you take steps to account for the following features:

    • Speedometer/ Odometer readings: these are affected if your tyre circumference is increased (as it will be if you increase your tyre height/ diameter), as one rotation is meant to click off (for example) one meter and having a circumference of a different length means that 1.5m is being read as that one meter – it is easy to see how this will affect your speedo and odometer readings.
    • Gearing: cars are carefully calibrated to work as they are sold, with the right sized tyres in place. If you are going to boost your tyre size, the gearing ratio must be reduced accordingly.
    • Steering Response and Handling: as might be guessed, the size of your tyres affects how readily the car responds to the steering wheel, and depending on how the tyres are fitted, you might find the steering becomes ‘slushy’ and slow to respond, or too sharp, jolting and swinging you around corners like a fairground ride!

But if you are determined to increase your tyre size, there are some advantages to be enjoyed: greater tactility can keep you gripping the road better, some cars respond very well with bigger tyres, allowing you to enjoy great handling and cornering, and finally – they look great too!
