‘Wicked’ the musical has just celebrated its 15th anniversary in London as the show is now back open at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre.

‘wicked' celebrates 15 years in london

‘Wicked’ is a West End and Broadway musical phenomenon. It is the 9th longest running musical in London and winner of over 100 major awards, including three Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards. The show has been seen by over 10 million people in London alone, and 60 million worldwide, and many people have seen it dozens of times.

‘Wicked’ tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz (yes, the one called ‘Wizard of Oz’). From the brain of composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, the two witches from the famous 1939 movie are the focus in ‘Wicked’ in a show that reveals the decisions and events of two university friends and their journey to becoming Glinda the Good witch and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The story unfolds between the two women who meet first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda, and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba. Following an encounter with The Wizard, their friendship reaches a crossroads, and their lives take very different paths. Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The returning cast include Sophie Evans, who previously played Glinda from 2017-2019, and will star opposite Laura Pick, who continues her acclaimed performance as Elphaba.

Wicked’s music and lyrics are by the legendary composer Schwartz (whose enduringly popular musical Godspell celebrated its 50th Anniversary on 17 May 2021), with a book by Winnie Holzman (creator of the landmark American television series My So-Called Life). It is based onGregory Maguire’s multi-million-copy bestseller, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

It’s a fantastical show, with ‘Defying Gravity’ the highlight of the show.
