It is no longer rare to see electric cars on the road with many motorists making the switch in recent years, but what about electric motorcycles? These are not as common right now but it seems that they could be in the future with riders realizing that they can still provide a thrilling experience along with a handful of benefits.
Registrations on the Rise
Press statistics from MCIA report that in November 2020 there had been an impressive 45.7% rise in year to date electric motorcycle registrations and a 15.3% rise compared to November last year, so it seems that motorcyclists are starting to make the switch although there is still a lot of work to be done.
Eco-Awareness & Government Perks
So, what could be the cause behind this rise in electric motorcycle registrations over the last year? The world is becoming much more eco-conscious and people are looking for ways to make positive changes in their life so this is certainly one reason why people are switching to electric bikes. In addition to this, it is likely that the UK Government grant for low emission vehicles is another major reason with the grant paying up to 20% of the purchase price. The Government also extended its electric vehicle home charging scheme which provides a grant of up to £350 to go towards an electric charging socket for homes or workplaces.
The Future
Mark Copper, Head of Product-Bike at Carole Nash, commented on the current and future outlook for electric bikes in the UK:
“With sales of electric motorcycles increasing in 2019, and growth seen in early 2020, March’s budget announcement sends a positive message of encouragement of support to the future.”
“This is a sign that electric motorcycles style is developing compared to the previous ranges available in the market, which will attract a wider audience.”
Range
The greater range of bikes and improving technology is another major reason why more people are making the switch as people can find bikes that best suit their tastes and needs. There are lots of excellent bikes currently to choose from, including:
- BMW C Evolution
- Energica Ego
- Harley-Davidson Livewire
- Super Soco
- Zero Motorcycles
Improved Tech
Today’s electric motorcycles can provide a thrilling experience which is so important to motorcyclists, plus the technology has improved so range anxiety is less of an issue. The top brands can offer around 100 miles per charge with normal riding and with an increasing number of EV charging points this becomes even less of an issue.
It seems that electric motorcycles are growing in popularity and more riders will make the switch in the next year or two thanks to the environmental benefits, the financial perks, Government grants, improving technology and greater variety now available to motorcyclists being the key reasons why.
