Mansour Jahani – Avan Jamal, the lead actress of Shawkat Amin Korki’s “The Exam” which is set to represent Iraq in the 2023 Academy Awards, has thus remarked amongst a number of Academy members in Los Angeles and New York, “The Exam is a picture reflecting the woes and sorrows of women in Kurdistan and the Middle East. Desperate to evade forced marriages, these girls resort to cheating techniques on school tests.” Giving an impressive speech to Academy members, Jamal provided a glimpse into the circumstances of women in the Middle East. The attendees were listening to her with much enthusiasm as she stated the following words, ” I was only 9 years old when I witnessed the cruelest act of life.

My two beautiful sisters, 13 and 16, were forcibly married against their will. Twenty-two years later, I’m playing the role of a character in a film who is going through the same thing. The Exam is a picture which shows the calamity and grief of women in Kurdistan and the Middle East.

To this day, women have been struggling for their rights to education and free speech. They’re forced into early marriages and are constant victims of honor killings. Their dreams and life aspirations are shattered. Luckily, there are also women with courage and ferocity who are changing that very reactionary way of life and are the voice of worldwide female revolutions. In Iran, for instance, Zhina Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish young lady, was killed by the Islamic regime of Iran. She died while fighting for freedom. Many like her were killed fighting for the same purpose. It’s her ardent followers who are now the voice of this revolution.

I believe The exam was/is the backbone of this alive movement. Finally, I want to welcome you with the familiar Kurdish slogan, Jin Jiyan Azadi – Woman Life Freedom – to watch this special film.” There will be special screenings of “The Exam” held by Berlin’s Mitosfilm and ArtHood, German production companies, on 8 December 2022, at 4 pm in Berlin, Germany, as well as two American screenings on 3&6 December, 2022, in Los Angeles and New York, respectively.Mansour Jahani – Avan Jamal, the lead actress of Shawkat Amin Korki’s “The Exam” which is set to represent Iraq in the 2023 Academy Awards, has thus remarked amongst a number of Academy members in Los Angeles and New York, “The Exam is a picture reflecting the woes and sorrows of women in Kurdistan and the Middle East.
