ITV is to screen a new documentary series that promises to delve deep into the captivating world of horse racing. Produced by South Shore, the series aims to bring compelling tales from behind the scenes. These will concern both human and equine lives, epitomising the drama that makes the sport so enthralling.

    The aim of the game

One of the primary focuses of the series will be to shed light on the high levels of welfare standards applied to racehorses and jockeys, a crucial aspect often overshadowed by the adrenaline-fuelled races. By showcasing these behind-the-scenes efforts, the series aims to offer viewers a comprehensive understanding of the sport’s dedication to animal welfare.

Supported by industry giants Flutter and Racecourse Media Group (RMG), the project emphasises collaboration across the racing community. Various stakeholders, including the Professional Jockeys’ Association and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), have already thrown their weight behind the initiative, underlining the widespread enthusiasm for this groundbreaking venture.

    Captivating stories

The series feeds a passion for horse racing that’s been well-served on both the big and small screens over the years. Most recently, the crowd-pleasing 2020 film Dream Horse told the true story of Dream Alliance. Driven by an ambitious barmaid from Wales, a syndicate is formed in her hometown to pay the fees to breed and train a racehorse. Critics praised the film’s uplifting real-life story and the performances of its leads Toni Collette and Damian Lewis.

The film captured the imaginations of audiences. Its focus on a local community coming together as a syndicate is fitting given the growth of the practice in the last few years. Several companies now offer opportunities to buy horse shares in the UK and Ireland. There are also options to buy shares in a racehorse gift voucher for friends and family who want to take their love of the sport further.

ITV’s new six-part documentary promises an array of captivating stories and insider glimpses into the world of horse racing, aiming to attract a wider, more diverse audience. Harrington believes that bringing the passion and excitement of the sport directly into people’s homes can only be beneficial.

Horse racing is as popular as ever. In terms of spectator sports, only football is bigger in the UK. Approximately six million people head to Britain’s racecourses annually. Furthermore, the Grand National, one of the biggest events on the calendar, takes place every year in the UK. It attracts huge crowds and is watched by millions worldwide on TV.

Julie Harrington, the Chief Executive of the British Horseracing Authority, voiced her anticipation for the upcoming series, describing it as an “extremely exciting development for the sport.” She noted the industry’s strategic goal of reaching new audiences while also enhancing the experience for existing fans by showcasing the brilliance of horse racing.

As anticipation mounts for Champions to hit screens later this year, producer Melanie Leach said she was looking forward to audiences witnessing first-hand the “dedication, determination, and bravery” within British horse racing that the series aims to capture.
