Penguins at the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham have been celebrating the royal wedding this week with their very own street party, closely followed by a unique celebration under the sea in the UK’s only 360° ocean tunnel for the aquarium’s team.
The royal wedding is one of the most talked about topics of the year as Prince Harry and fiancé Meghan Markle have prepared to tie the knot on Saturday 19th March. Celebrations have been taking place across the country this week as excited neighbourhoods undertake street parties and gatherings to watch the occasion.
One of the eager parties is the resident colony of cheeky Gentoo penguins at the National Sea Life Centre, who have this week enjoyed their very own street party to celebrate the occasion. The group were treated to their own penguin party, with ‘afternoon tea’ complete with their favourite fishy treats, and even a giant ice cake for them to peck at.
‘All of us at the aquarium are thrilled for Prince Harry and Meghan and we wanted to do something special to celebrate,’ explains Penguin Keeper, James McElroy.
‘When we showed our penguins a picture of the happy couple they were very curious, so we decided to treat them to a special party to celebrate!’
It wasn’t just the penguins getting involved though, as the aquarium team also took part in a unique underwater street party to mark the occasion.
‘Many of our staff will be working this weekend, and we just couldn’t let them miss out on the celebrations. So we hosted an underwater street party in our 360° ocean tunnel – it was certainly a unique way to celebrate!’ explains Amy Langham, General Manager.
The aquarium will be open during the weekend of the royal wedding, with tickets available from £13.00 when purchased online in advance.
