    Tips for cleaning your glasses

From waking up to going back to sleep, our glasses go through a lot; dirt, dust, oil, and sweat, it’s no surprise they can easily get dirty, hazy or cloudy. Your glasses are bound to accumulate dust and dirt especially when you’re a full-time glasses wearer. They are your eye’s protector and help you with vision too. A lot of people tend to clean their lenses roughly or in a hurry. Usually, our shirt is the first thing we reach for to wipe our glasses along with a blow of our breath. Well, it’s not the end of the world but it’s not best practice either. The convenience of grabbing your T-shirt and wiping the lenses can cause particles from your shirt to transfer onto the lens. These dust particles are abrasive and can cause scratches/damage to your lenses.

It is important to clean your lenses regularly because of the dirt and grease build-up. They help you enjoy clear and healthy vision. The following steps will help you understand the what’s, how’s, and why’s of cleaning your glasses.

    1. Handle your glasses with care

First things first, handle your glasses properly with both hands when you’re taking them off. You can handle them using the hinges and temples for a better grip. This way you can avoid the smudges on the lenses and avoid the risk of them falling down and breaking.

    1. Keep your glasses facing upwards

Before starting to clean your glasses, make sure you keep them on a flat surface, with the lenses facing upwards (not with the lenses face down). This might sound like a simple and obvious step, but you might not realise and leave them downside when you’re rushing. Remember, putting them lens-side down on a surface can cause scratches and damage to your glasses.

    1. Wash your hands and use a microfibre cloth

Wash your hands properly with soap and ensure to dry your hands with a lint-free cloth/microfibre cloth. This is to ensure that no lint particles are transferred from the cloth to the glasses. The use of a microfibre cloth is highly recommended as it removes grease and dirt without the risk of scratching the lens.

    1. Use a lens cleaner to clean your glasses

It is highly recommended to use a lens cleaner; gently spray a microfibre cloth with the lens cleaner and then start cleaning your glasses in a rotating motion (gently). It is recommended to spray the cloth first rather than spraying the lens because the lens solution might have certain chemicals that can damage the frame (depending on what material the frame is made of). Additionally, the lens cleaner can get inside the grooves of the glasses and may cause rusting.

    1. Clean thoroughly

Remember to clean both sides of the lenses and the temples, nose pads and arms too! It is essential to clean small areas such as nose pads and temple tips because this is where grease, hair products and makeup tend to rub off.

    1. Dry your glasses

Finally, dry your lenses with a lint-free cloth or even better – a microfibre cloth.

Some handy tips for glasses wearers

    • Make sure you clean your glasses every day, AM and PM.
    • To be more cost-effective, you can choose from a wide variety of glasses cleaning kits available such as the Feel Good Cleaning Kit.

This handy kit can easily fit in your pocket and is perfect for those who have a busy routine, it will save you money and protect your glasses.

    • If you don’t have a lens cleaner, you can opt for compostable soft microfibre lens wipes. As the name suggests, these wipes can be used in place of a lens cleaner and microfibre fabric, it’s compostable too!
    • Never use hot water, saliva, dish/hand soap, or household glass cleaner to clean your glasses. They can be highly damaging.
    • Always carry a spare pair of glasses and cleaning wipes with you. It’s handy to carry an extra pair of glasses for a situation such as if your glasses fall in a puddle or dirt and cleaning is not an option.
