Brighton based 5-piece Canned Pineapple return with the infectious new single ‘Bowie’.
Once again showcasing their scuzz-pop and slacker rock sound which has seen them gain support across the likes of NME, Radio X (John Kennedy) and BBC Introducing, the band continue to build their catalogue ahead of their hotly anticipated upcoming new EP.
Led by Irish vocalist Seán Drury and his songwriting partner Oakley Gardiner, alongside multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer Jude Allenby, Guitarist Gabe Rice and drummer Charlie Pringle, the band have honed and crafted their unique, expressive yet vibrant and catchy sound, building a reputation for the high-octane live shows.
Built around a sea of indie guitar tones, intricate bass runs and a driving rhythm section, ‘Bowie’ captures a sense of freedom and euphoria as the track shuffles under the distorted, charismatic yet carefree vocal delivery. As swelling slide guitars glide above the track, the vocal is broken up by a chanting “yeah yeah yeah”, leaning into the euphoric indie side of the band’s sound before the chorus dips into its stripped, melancholic chorus.
A tongue-in-cheek ode to David Bowie, the track’s witty storytelling lyricism drops references whilst retaining a sincerity for the band’s admiration. Talking about the track, lead singer Sean explains:
“Bowie marks the transition between old and new gearing the audience up for the next era of Canned Pineapple, Bowie is a reflection upon the last time singer Sean Drury ever got his haircut in a barbers. He had taken a strong dose of LSD and decided it was time to get his haircut. When the barber’s blade touched Drurys head, the news came that David Bowie had passed to the other side, sending Sean into a deep dark despair.
This track is a first person perspective on this unique adventure.”
Having released their self-titled debut EP online and on vinyl, via Goo Records, the awesome fivesome have toured across the UK and Ireland in their Nissan Micra, conquering some of England and Irelands most important grassroots venues. With acclaim from NME, BBC Introducing, BBC Introducing and Clunk Magazine among others, the band have graced stages at The Edge of the Sea Festival and opened for the likes of The Wedding Present, Blood Red Shoes and The Love Buzz.
