Are you tempted to try a cruise for your next trip but don’t know quite where to begin? Commercial cruises have been running since the 1840s, taking tourists to a range of incredible destinations around the world and providing a thrilling on-the-water experience. Use this beginner’s guide to choosing the right cruise to ensure a fantastic first-time experience of this unique holiday option.

Choosing the right cruise a beginner’s guide

    Understand your options

What most first-timers are unaware of is that not all cruises are the same. Each cruise operator has its own unique offering, and there are major differences between the two main types of vessel: cruise ships and ocean liners.

Ocean liners are more sturdy and sit lower in the water, designed to get you quickly from point A to point B. They tend to be tied to a particular schedule with specific timings and durations for your time at the ports. In contrast, cruise ships are smaller and lighter and can access shallower waters. They usually have more freedom and flexibility in terms of docking destinations and time and run at a more leisurely speed.

    Pick your preferred trip

Once you understand your different options, the next step is identifying the right trip for you.

If you want your time on the water to be relaxed rather than racing, a cruise ship tour is the best bet. In contrast, a fast-paced ocean liner travels more quickly and prioritises your time spent on land. With this in mind, ocean liners tend to take you to just one place – usually in a fairly far-flung destination – while cruise ships pull in and out of plenty of ports to create a multi-destination tour.

    Consider the facilities

Another major difference between the different types of cruise experience is the kind of facilities that guests have on board. Especially if you are travelling with children, it is important to ensure that there are amenities to keep everyone engaged for the duration of your holiday.

Established companies such as P&O Cruises make sure that their ships are kitted out with a wide range of amenities, including child-specific offerings like kids swimming pools and play areas. Adults seeking a truly indulgent getaway should look out for vessels with spas on board and elevated dining options. Don’t forget to consider the evening entertainment which can range from wow-factor dance performances to low-key live music shows.

    Pre-book key elements

As well as booking your chosen cruise, take the time to pre-book key elements of your trip as well.

Those who suffer from sea-sickness should request a mid-ship cabin where the rocking is less noticeable. You can also choose a particular meal plan to suit your preferences and budget, such as an all-inclusive package which helps to guarantee a stress-free experience on the ship. It is also worth looking at the different tour options for your destinations and pre-booking any activities that you feel are an absolute must for you and your companions.
