Acclaimed fashion designer Hector Maclean is set to captivate audiences at London Fashion Week with the unveiling of his highly anticipated collection, ‘Into The Gloaming’. Drawing inspira5on from Christina RosseG’s enigmatic poem, Goblin Market, Maclean’s collection is a stirring explora5on of transforma5on, empowerment, and the hidden realms of femininity.
Goblin Market tells the story of two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who encounter a group of mysterious goblins selling forbidden fruit. Laura, lured in by the temptations of the goblins, eats the fruit and soon falls gravely ill, while Lizzie bravely faces the goblins in order to save her sister. The poem serves as a complex metaphor, touching upon themes of tempta5on, sisterhood, and sacrifice, as well as underlying social issues of the 5me, including women’s exploitation and addiction.
In ‘Into The Gloaming’, Maclean weaves these elements into a dramatic fashion narrative, where the models, like the sisters in RosseG’s poem, undergo a stunning transformation. As the show progresses, the collec5on takes the audience on a visual journey from innocence to darkness. The garments, which ini5ally feature soN pastel tones, evolve into more vibrant hues, and finally into deep, drama5c shades – mirroring the emo5onal arc of the sisters and their encounters with the goblins.
Maclean’s designs are not only a reflection of the mystical and moral undertones of Goblin Market, but also a tribute to RosseG’s lesser-known advocacy for women’s rights. RosseG was deeply involved in supporting women in distress, helping those in prostitution and addiction through her work with women’s refuges. This humanitarian commitment resonates in Maclean’s work, bringing a sense of social consciousness to the runway.
The collection also highlights Maclean’s commitment to inclusivity and sustainability. A maroon gown with gathered fabric and a dramatic silhoueRe leads the transition from soNness to strength, while the electric blue mini dress features bold, architectural folds. A blush pink oneshoulder dress and a gold sculptural mini dress stand out as statements of empowerment, blending striking textures with fluid designs.
Furthermore, ‘Into The Gloaming’ subtly nods to the oNen-discussed homoerotic undertones of RosseG’s poem. The intimate bond between the sisters, their care for one another, and the subtext of desire add a layer of depth to Maclean’s collection, reinforcing his commitment to inclusivity and diversity in fashion.
Sustainability remains central to the Hector Maclean brand. This collection is craNed entirely from byproducts, embracing zero-waste paRern cuGng techniques. Each garment is a testament to the brand’s dedication to minimizing its environmental footprint while pushing the boundaries of creativity. The ethereal prints featured in the collection have been specially designed by CharloRe Scoular, adding another layer of artistry and innova5on to the designs.
As Hector Maclean takes the audience ‘Into The Gloaming’, this boundary-breaking collection promises to not only mesmerize with its visual storytelling but also provoke thought on the intersections of art, social justice, and sustainability.
