Behind the Scenes with Alexander Seltzer: Crafting Chilling Narratives from Deepest Fears
Toronto-based filmmaker Alexander Seltzer has been making waves in the genre film scene with his haunting and thought-provoking works. Originally from the UK, Seltzer has a knack for transforming his deepest fears into gripping cinematic experiences. His latest short film, The Door, recently premiered at HollyShorts in Los Angeles, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response. “It was the biggest screen I’ve seen it on so far,” Seltzer recalls, describing the electric atmosphere of the film-savvy LA crowd.
The Door explores the harrowing journey of a grieving mother who becomes obsessed with a mysterious door that suddenly appears in her kitchen, a year after her child’s disappearance. “It’s the kind of unsettling horror that gets under your skin,” Seltzer explains, emphasizing his preference for psychological thrills over outright scares. The film’s chilling narrative is a reflection of Seltzer’s own fears about parenthood and the overwhelming love that can push someone to the edge.
Despite the short’s brief 15-minute runtime, Seltzer expertly conveys the heavy themes of grief and obsession. He credits much of this success to his talented cast and crew. “It starts with the writing, but casting is crucial,” Seltzer notes, praising the performances of his lead actors, Taniya and Raymond. The film’s haunting atmosphere is further enhanced by its meticulous sound design and cinematography, elements that Seltzer is particularly proud of.
Looking ahead, Seltzer is expanding The Door into a feature-length film, promising to delve deeper into the story’s paranormal and psychological elements. Though still in the early stages, he hints at a narrative that blends ghost story vibes with 70s paranoia thrillers, exploring the moral dilemmas faced by parents in impossible situations.
Seltzer’s journey as a filmmaker has been one of determination and self-discovery. After dabbling in various creative fields, including an early stint at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, it was his love for storytelling that ultimately drew him to film. “I think if you’re doing it right, you’re exposing your spirit, your soul,” he says, reflecting on the vulnerability that comes with sharing one’s work with the world.
As he continues to carve out his niche in the film industry, Seltzer remains grounded by the support of a close-knit creative circle. Whether it’s his producer Mark, whom he met on the festival circuit, or his girlfriend Sydney, a former musician turned doctor, these key relationships have been instrumental in his creative process. “Having a solid team around you is essential,” he affirms, highlighting the importance of collaboration in bringing his cinematic visions to life.
With The Door making its mark on the festival circuit and a feature film in development, Alexander Seltzer is undoubtedly a filmmaker to watch, as he continues to explore the dark corners of human emotion through his unique lens.
