Patrick Joseph is a fashion lifestyle brand created by designer Patrick Mhlanga. The line made its debut with a men’s tailored collection and has expanded to cater for Women and Men’s ready to wear mixed with his signature dramatic Couture pieces, exclusively made as one-off pieces. The brand launched in 2011 after Patrick Mhlanga decided to turn his passion for design and tailoring into a business and showcased it at LFW in 2019.
Taking huge inspiration from his grandparents, Patrick Mhlanga reminisces about his Grandfather wearing tailored suits six days a week, which sparked his interest in craftsmanship and tailoring. From a young age, he also experimented with his grandmother’s sewing equipment, creating patterns and experimenting with fabrics, which developed his creativity and skills.
Patrick Joseph has a unique and considered take on craftsmanship, a value of core importance to the brand, using a mix of British and Italian sourced materials. This unique pairing is also reflected within the design, mixing quintessential British elegance with traditional Italian flair, creating striking garments inspired by the best of both worlds.
For this collection, the brand also pays homage to its classic British tailoring roots, sourcing fabrics made in the Yorkshire Mills UK, a region rich in heritage and world-renowned for quality UK fabric manufacturing.
The limited-edition collection takes inspiration from the history of the LGBTQ community, particularly the struggles they faced during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The collection was purposely created to be gender fluid, reflecting it’s core inspiration to bring down the barriers of sexism and homophobia. The garments are thoughtfully designed to redefine the limitations of ready to wear fashion.
