Travelling with your dog can be a wonderful experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Despite the joy of having your furry friend along, the logistics can be stressful.

Stress free travel tips for couples and their dogs

From finding dog-friendly places to stay to ensuring travel safety, a little preparation can go a long way in making your journey smooth and enjoyable. Here are some detailed tips to help you and your furry friend travel stress-free.

    Preparing for the journey

Preparation is key. Start by ensuring your dog is comfortable with car rides or any other mode of travel you plan to use. Gradually acclimate them to longer trips to reduce anxiety. Pack all essentials, including food, water and any medications.

Consider packing sensitive dog food if your pup has dietary needs or a sensitive stomach. This ensures they maintain their regular diet, avoiding potential health issues during the trip.

Before you set off, check your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and has a microchip with your current contact information. Carrying copies of their medical records can be helpful in case of emergencies.

    Choosing dog-friendly accommodation

Finding the right accommodation is important for a comfortable stay. Thankfully, there are many dog-friendly hotels to choose from. Look for places with amenities like spacious walking areas, dog-friendly dining options, and even dog-sitting services.

In the UK, popular dog-friendly destinations include the South West Coast Path, Lake District, and the Scottish Highlands. These areas offer beautiful scenery and numerous activities that you and your dog can enjoy together.

    Travel safety and comfort

Safety is paramount when travelling with your pup. If you’re driving, use a dog seat belt, travel crate, or a barrier to keep them secure and reduce distractions. Plan regular stops to allow them to stretch, hydrate, and relieve themselves.

If you’re flying, ensure to use an airline-approved carrier and check the airline’s animal policies in advance. Consider direct flights to minimise the stress on your dog, and avoid travelling in extreme temperatures.

    Activities and destinations

Choose destinations that offer activities suitable for dogs. Many UK national parks and coastal areas are perfect for dogs, providing ample opportunities for hiking, beach days, and exploring new environments.

Be considerate that any activity planned is within your dog’s physical capabilities. Hiking, swimming, and even boat trips can be fun and stimulating. Always keep a close eye on them to ensure they are happy and safe.

    Managing stress and anxiety

Travel can be stressful for dogs, so managing their anxiety is crucial. Familiar items like their bed, toys, or a blanket can provide comfort. Consider using calming products such as pheromone sprays or calming treats to help them relax.

Maintaining a routine as much as possible can also reduce stress. Regular feeding times, walks, and play sessions provide a sense of normality. Additionally, staying calm and positive yourself can help your dog feel more secure.
