Everyone knows that regular exercise and a healthy diet are key to good health, but getting enough sleep each night is just as important. It is recommended that adults get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night, so people should aim for 8 to get the right balance. When you are able to do this on a regular basis, you will improve your health and overall well-being in countless ways. Why You Should Get 8 Hours of Sleep a Night

The Importance of Sleep for Health

Getting 8 hours of sleep is not only important for improving your health, but also for protecting you against various health-related issues. Contact lenses experts Lenstore explain the importance:

“As tempting as it might be to stay up late and binge on your favourite shows, it’s important to give your body the proper rest it needs. Doctors recommend adults should get a minimum of 7 hours sleep each night. Prolonged lack of sleep can lead to a host of health-related problems such as depression, high blood pressure, and impairment in immunity. Lack of sleep can also seriously affect your eyes with eye spasms, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. To ensure you get enough rest each night, make sure your sleeping environment works for what your needs are. Typically, the darker the room is, the better you will sleep. It’s recommended for adults to keep the temperature between 18-20 degrees and avoid screen time right before bed as blue light stimulates the brain in the same way the sun does, making it harder to fall asleep.

A condition that seriously affects the quality of your sleep is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is where your breathing starts and stops while you sleep. When you stop breathing during sleep, this causes a lack of oxygen flow to your brain, which can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems, decreased liver function, changes in your vision, and is a risk factor for glaucoma. If you suspect you or your partner have sleep apnea it’s important to speak to a medical professional as it is a serious medical condition.”

    Other Benefits

It is clear that getting 8 hours of sleep each night is important for your general health, but there are other benefits too. If you get into good sleeping habits, you should also find that you have more energy each day and this can improve your life in many ways. Having more energy allows you to focus more, improve your productivity, have more energy for exercise and socialising and generally feel happier.

Getting 8 hours of sleep on a regular basis is incredibly important for your health and well-being and can improve your life in countless ways. Despite being as important as regular exercise and a healthy diet, many people struggle with their sleeping habits and should look to make improvements to start leading a healthier lifestyle and one with more energy.
