Ljubljana Fashion Week 2024 (LJFW)

Ljubljana Fashion Week (LJFW) celebrated its 10th anniversary and 15th edition with a dynamic display of 46 collections from October 7-11 at the Rog Center, reinforcing the city’s status as a sustainable gem. Designers seamlessly integrated eco-conscious principles into their work, exemplified by Nika Ravnik x Perwoll Rethink New’s upcycled “Fragments” collection, which transformed textile remnants into zero-waste garments, and DRAŽ’s “Threads of History,” which reimagined Slovenian cultural artefacts through AI and modern woven techniques. In a more provocative take, Made in Anselma critiqued the contradictions in sustainability discourse with their “Démodé” collection, using discarded curtains to challenge ideas around waste and excess.

Tanja Vidic continued to push the boundaries of knitwear design through her bold cuts and sensual exploration of textiles in collaboration with MANDEGAR. Known for her international acclaim, including a feature in Rolling Stone, Vidic and MANDEGAR recently collaborated with Rick Owens at Paris Fashion Week, further solidifying their positions as avant-garde forces in the fashion industry. LJFW’s celebration of sustainability and innovation continues to draw global attention, cementing Ljubljana’s role as a key player in the evolving landscape of contemporary fashion.

MADE IN ANSELMA ‘DÉMODÉ

This year’s collection is designed a little differently than the previous ones. It utilizes the catwalk format with all the attributes: video background, music effect and theatrical uniqueness. The show is more conceptual and theatrical – a spectacle, not at all a commercial presentation of products. The ‘Made in Anselma’ brand makes clothes from dead-stock fabrics. This year’s collection was made entirely from old curtains, a collateral clutter that accumulates when such materials are collected. Despite the fact that they resorted to waste material, the ‘Démodé’ collection is by no means sustainable. They spent a lot of hours, electricity and energy. Above all, they destroyed old but useful curtains and made completely useless and unwearable clothes from them, whose only future is in the waste.

The fact that the collection is made out of curtains is only a medium and not its essence. The driving concept is above all social criticism. It is a reflection on the absurdity of modern man, the senselessness of our (civilizational) doing, the exaggeration and deprivation on all the wrong levels. The collection is an expression of helplessness and disagreements with the current state of society and the world in general. Also with the meandering about sustainability, about slow fashion, the green transition and such. and the like. Consequently, the collection consists of absurd and nonsensical pieces. Superficially and hastily prepared accessories made of cardboard, layers of curtains and paper. Clothes, shoes and headpieces do not serve any of their basic functions: neither protection, nor insulation, or covering. They become an end in itself. And meanwhile the water is flowing in the background. Into the void.

TANJA VIDIC X MANDEGAR ‘COLLECTION 01’

COLLECTION 01 is Tanja’s first independent work following her graduation, exploring the boundaries of her established design expression and questioning continuation. The collection is a collaboration with the brand MANDEGAR contributing hand-crafted metal pieces and accessories to the collection.

Tanja Vidic is a knitwear designer from Slovenia known for her experimental approach to materials and methods, pushing the boundaries of traditional knitwear.

Through mindful cuts, openings, and the sensual reveal of the body, she explores the relationship between knitted textiles and the body, where one dictates the form and placement of the other, and vice versa. Vidic’s designs have gained international recognition, with her pieces featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, where Cardi B wore one of her signature looks, as well as with her recent collaboration with designer Rick Owens for his Spring/Summer 2025 collection, showcased in Vogue.

MATIC VELER X ASKO ‘A SYNERGY OF AESTHETICS & FUNCTIONALITY

The new collection, created in collaboration with the Asko brand, is an excellent example of the approach to merging contrasts. In this collection, where fashion meets technology, Matic uses modern techniques such as laser cutting to create pieces that blend technological innovation with artistic vision. Just as in his previous work, he once again combines opposites to create unique creations that connect different worlds.

Collaboration between ASKO and Matic Veler: A Synergy of Aesthetics and Functionality

DRAŽ ‘THREAD OF HISTORY’

History of threads or a thread of history? An endless thread is at the heart of our story, but what we do with it defines a completely different kind of thread.

One that connects mothers and daughters, great-grandfathers and the newly born, one living being with another, and the earth with the sky. We sense the traces of these bonds in bundles, laces, embroideries, baskets… The ties among us are the most precious thing we possess, so we have woven a new story from them. Our inspiration came from the memory carriers, items from the Slovene Ethnographic Museum, which we have translated into a contemporary woven texture. We unraveled tradition with artificial intelligence and created fantastical images, syntheses of different techniques and materials. The result is pictures of bobbin laces made from hazel branches, baskets from golden threads, woven into subdued, soft, and delicate garments for entangling in a fresh everyday. Those who will wear them will be bound to the safe haven of the past and keep pace in the search for what is most precious in life.

“Fragments” is an upcycled collection that transforms the remnants of textiles into innovative and sustainable fabrics with the zero-waste approach. This collection draws inspiration from the principles of architecture, art, and interactive design to create a multifaceted fashion experience. Each garment is a unique piece, crafted from leftover fabrics, embodying the stories of the past and the promise of new beginnings. The collection is supported by Perwoll Rethink New as it shares the same sustainable mindset – reuse, rearrange and rethink.

JSP ‘SEEKERS/RULE BREAKERS/PATH FINDERS

We bring to you handcrafted original designs, paying attention to the aesthetics of the garment both inside and out. an expression of our inherent duality of masculine and feminine elements, the JSP brand stands for independence, individuality and a taste for the unexpected.

JSP stands for a creative duo – sisters Jelena and Svetlana Prokovic have been working in the fields of styling, costume design and contemporary fashion for more than 30 years. We started our brand in 1992 in Belgrade, where our brand is also based. In 1999 when Jelena moved to Ljubljana, Slovenia, she has managed to expand their brand to Slovenia and as well to Croatia. Being part of various fields of visual art brings Jelena and Svetlana tend to be closer to global trends, forming a reknowned brand, consisted of their experience. JSP- transcends femininity, precise cut and emphasises disctinctive style. JSP stands for ethical and sustainable fashion, craftsmanship and uniqueness. It brings fresh breeze to cloth-wearing and is available only exclusively. The spotlight is put onto generic products with strong commercial appeal. JSP collections tend to be presented in a most artistic, dramatic and visual way, with lots of added value. By special presetnation is meant, that JSP fashion shows and exhibitions present subtility and lucidity of brand, blended into an event, that clearly differs from others.

ÆMONA ‘ARGENTUM’

Among every cloud, a silver lining emerges—a glimmer of hope piercing through the shadows. Metaphorically, a silver lining represents the light that shines through life’s darkest moments, symbolizing resilience and optimism. The Argentum collection captures the essence of discovering beauty and strength amidst adversity, weaving the metaphorical meaning of a silver lining into a tangible expression that blends symbolism within the new garments. On a tangible level, a “lining” in clothing refers to the carefully crafted inner layer that provides structure, comfort, and finish— often overlooked yet essential. Though hidden, a well-made lining enhances the quality and feel of a garment, elevating it from within. Beyond representing the silver lining, the silver elements in our collection symbolize the journey of transformation. Just as silver undergoes a change when polished, reflecting transformation and personal growth, these pieces remind us that challenges can lead to the new, refined forms. Argentum intertwines the duality of these interpretations and wordplay, presenting a collection of garments that resonate with both the metaphorical and literal aspects of silver lining with each piece creating its own story.

TANJA UVERA ‘FLUID DNA’

The new collection is a mirror of current society, torn between work and self. Between “what I have to do” and “what I want to do”. We are uniformed and voluntarily censored in a society where “anything goes”. We drown in new rules and constantly choose our newly created gender. Work hard, party hard is our mantra. It is composed of unique knitwear that allows for individual styling. The jewellery for the collection was made by Tanja’s daughter Lucija Uvera.

The brand “Tanja Uvera” is based on unique knitted fabrics. Due to her sustainable awareness, she customizes most of the clothing. The client chooses the initial look from the collection, which Tanja adjusts in terms of color and style. Her studio is located in the old part of Maribor. She finds inspiration for her collections in current social events, relationships between people, and color inspiration in people and nature. In timeless knits, she weaves the spirit of the times and adds stylish elements that sign “fun in fashion.” This time she collaborates with her daughter Lucija Uvera, who has complemented the collection with subcultural fashion accessories.

BARBARA VRBANČIČ ‘METAMORPHOSIS’

The newest fashion collection weaves a tale of winter flowers evolving into whimsical creatures. Garments are a canvas of metamorphosis, as delicate petals transform into peculiar beings, echoing the beauty of deconstruction and the allure of different textures. The original floral patterns, sourced from second-hand materials, feature wild blooms that bear a striking resemblance to fantastical creatures, sparking the imagination and blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. ‘Metamorphosis’ is a tribute to the magic of nature’s transformations and a celebration of the infinite possibilities that bloom from the union of artistry and nature

Barbara Vrbancic is an academic textile and clothing designer, often uses old hand techniques or vintage inspiration in her design solutions, which she upgrades and reinterprets in her own way into modern sustainable urban clothing pieces or projects. In her independent design work, she often knits on a manual knitting machine, which enables the creation of her own textiles and precise planning of a collection with as little waste as possible.

TANJAZORN ‘TOUCH’

Clothes that invite you to a tactile experience, transparencies and surfaces that reveal and discover more dimensions of clothes. They talk about the comfort and freedom of both the body and our expression. They are the greenery of our everyday life with accents.

TANJAZORN is a brand of fashion clothing, which was founded in 1995 by designer Tanja Zorn Grželj. After a successful collaboration with various Slovenian companies and sole notable collections, selling abroad, she decided to design and produce clothing under his own name. Slowly and reliably followed his creative vision that links tradition with innovation, originality of pret a porte and passion for design with great attention to aesthetics. It has been awarded as a Fashion designer of 2016, according to the Elle Style Awards.
