Planet-Friendly Changes You Can Make To Be A Sustainable Household

Sustainability is one of the biggest watchwords at the moment, isn’t it? You’ll have seen the rise in temperatures and extreme weather events. It’s abundantly clear that everyone needs to be doing more to help out. Now, it can seem like an overwhelming issue. After all, you’re just one family. But there are many small steps that can help you to be a part of the solution.

Planet Friendly Changes You Can Make To Be A Sustainable Household

    Conserve Water

First, fix any leaks in your pipes or faucets. Even a small drip can waste a significant amount of water over time. You can also install low-flow showerheads and faucets to reduce water usage. Even something as small as turning off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth or shaving can save gallons of water each day.

    Reduce Energy Consumption

Here’s a big one to save you money on your energy bills as well as help the environment. Start by turning off lights and electronics like your TV and computer when they’re not in use. You can also switch to energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances. You might be surprised by how much getting new curtains can reduce your energy loss.

    Recycle and Repair Broken Machines

Repairing broken machines instead of throwing them away is a huge step towards fighting e-waste. When an appliance or electronic device breaks down, consider repairing it instead of replacing it. You can also buy second-hand items or refurbished electronics to reduce the demand for new products. Say you’re looking for mobile repair, and you’ve had enough of searching “mobile phone repairs near me.” Likewize Repair will come to you and offer excellent customer service. Their repairs usually take less than an hour, so you can get on with the important stuff. If your electronics cannot be repaired, a proper disposal is a must. You can also donate electronics to an e-waste recycling partner for an eco-friendly disposal.

    Think About Composting

If you’ve never done this before, composting means breaking down your food scraps and garden waste into nutrient-rich soil. You can do it at home using a compost bin, or you can find a community composting program in your area (check any local allotments). It’s a great way of using your household waste and of getting out in the garden more too!

    Say Goodbye To Single-Use Plastics

Single-use plastics, like straws, bottles, and bags, are such a massive issue. What’s more, there are so many alternatives out there. You can start by picking up a refillable water bottle instead of buying endless bottles while you’re out of the house. Take reusable bags to the shop instead of using plastic bags (which you’ll have to pay for anyway). These little steps all add up!

    Cut Back On Meat

It’s bad news for die-hard carnivores: studies have shown that farming animals for meat has a major impact on greenhouse gas emissions. You don’t have to give up meat entirely. But think about having meat-free meals a few times a week. This could also help you to avoid serious health issues. So, think about picking up something healthier next time you’re at the supermarket. You might find some tasty recipes that surprise you.

    Use Public Transportation or Walk/Bike

It’s not always going to be an option to ditch the car. But driving is something that is always going to have an environmental impact. Think about using public transportation or walking/biking whenever possible. This not only reduces emissions, but it can also save you money on petrol!
