Every interior designer has their own theory, but mostly they all agree that a home should reflect the owner’s lifestyle, taste, and history. Every piece chosen and displayed in your home should tell a narrative. Your home should be your sanctuary from the storm and must reflect you in a highly personal way. The way that you decorate your home can have an unintentional impact on your mood and mental health. Trust your unique style and preferences and allow them free play when decorating your home.

    Trust What You Love

Be strong and assertive and trust your style. Don’t buy something because it’s “on-trend” – it must make you happy! Embrace your passion for boldness and color. Choose a statement piece and let that lead the way. If traveling through Mexico was a treasured time of your life, let that show in your decorating style. Warm and fashionable Mexican blankets made from recycled materials can add a pop of color to any room and serve as an instant reminder of what made and makes you happy. This may mean keeping everything else smaller and less bold so that your standout pieces may take center stage. Additionally, consider mixing it up by pairing statement pieces with their opposites, such as dark and light or organic and geometric.

Let Your Space Reflect Your History

Your home is a treasure trove of your history and can reveal where you have come from as well as where you are headed. In this way, find a way to prioritize your most prized possessions in your design decisions. Too often, people hide their most valuable items when they may be the perfect beginning point for an interior design concept that puts them, and your personality, in the limelight. If you have a piece that holds sentimental value, don’t get rid of it, rather, think outside of the box, and incorporate it into your décor in a way that was not initially intended. If you enjoy collecting unusual, handmade items and souvenirs, use these in your design and merge different textures, patterns, and colors.

Another way to personalize your home is by the artwork you choose to express yourself. You should select artwork that reflects your personal interests as well as those that motivate you. Family photos displayed in unique ways and settings are another way to add that personal touch.

It’s often the little things that matter the most. To add life and personality to your home, be creative with how you display children’s artworks and other sentimental pieces.

    Your Lifestyle

You must consider your lifestyle in general before making any hasty decisions. Do you normally choose comfort over style? Or vice versa? Your home must allow you to feel relaxed and at ease. This isn’t to say that you can’t combine comfort and style if you let your personality and preferences lead you. If comfort is important to you, you can certainly seek out stylish comfort by adding touches of flair and extravagance.

Often it is a good idea to allow the colors you wear most often in your wardrobe to guide you in choosing a palette for your home. Generally, these will be colors that make you happy and feel good about yourself and the world. White, beiges, and greys suit some people while others prefer bold bright shades of green, purple, orange, and crimson. Think neutral vs. bold, classic vs. industrial, and simplicity vs. creativity.

Keep in mind that the goal is to create a home that reflects your personality and preferences. Make a list of priorities and consider your personal style. The great news is that there are no rules when expressing your personal style, so feel free to do whatever makes you happy.
