Most Instagrammable Sights In UK Infographic Preview

The UK is a green and beautiful land and, as evidenced by new research from travel experts Expedia, one that’s full of spots ripe for being captured in a beautiful Instagram post.

The photo-based social network has spiked in popularity in recent years and now has 800 million active monthly users, many of whom like to ‘Insta’ their holidays, experiences and day-to-day lives.

Expedia has looked at the volume of Instagram posts and the number of unique hashtags over the past year to come up with a list of 12 of the most Instagrammed spots in the UK.

Given its global popularity, it’s perhaps not much of a surprise that with more than 2.5 million Insta posts this year alone Big Ben, the symbol of British democracy, is far and away the most captured UK sight on the social network.

The sight that takes the second spot, however, is a little more surprising… it’s a football stadium! Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC, had more than 490,000 snaps this year and is the second most papped UK sight.

The third is prehistoric site Stonehenge (more than 454,000 posts), fourth is the New Forest in southern England (more than 363,000) and fifth is Snowdonia in Wales (more than 360,000).SEVEN SISTERS

Here are 12 of the most Instagrammed sights in the UK:

    1. Big Ben

    2. Anfield

    3. Stonehenge

    4. New Forest

    5. Snowdonia

    6. Windermere

    7. Edinburgh Castle

    8. Glencoe

    9. Seven Sisters

    10. Giant’s Causeway

    11. York Minster

    12. Cambridge University

Expedia has featured the top 12 sights in a brand-new infographic, which includes some fun facts about each destination. Did you know, for example, that York Minster holds 60% of England’s medieval stained glass? Or that Glencoe is the remains of a supervolcano that last erupted 420 million years ago? This infographic is sure to inspire readers around the world.

STONEHENGEKasha Dubaniewicz, Project Manager at Expedia, said: “So many people now use Instagram to share their travel experiences with friends and family and it’s not hard to see why – the social network is free, easy to use and creates beautiful photos in a matter of moments.

“We wanted to find out which of the UK’s destinations prove the most popular with Instagram users, so we looked at the most-captured, most-hashtagged sites so far this year. While it’s not a surprise to see Big Ben at the top of the list, some of the others have proved to be a little more surprising.”
