We didn’t really expect the lockdown to be extended, that means more online shopping, browsing for sales and in-depth cleaning the wardrobe. Project declutter your wardrobe is always a work in progress, especially if you’re regularly reinventing your style. The one question every woman wants answered when clearing out clothes is whether they should keep some items that they can wear again or whether it’s worth throwing them out and investing in new clothing that are more current and more trendy. The best strategy, when spring cleaning your wardrobe, is to first pick out all your favourite pieces as Marie Kondo suggests in her Netflix series based on her book ‘The Lifechanging Magic of Tidying Up’ – Pick those items of clothing that ‘spark joy’. The clothing you just can’t let go – the pieces that are timeless like your favourite pair of jeans that fit well. As a Fashion Journalist, I feel there are some styles and items of clothing that never age and can always be worn every season.
Oversized T-Shirts
Classic, rachet, bougie and sassy – an oversized T-shirt never goes out of fashion. Trust me, it is one of those basics that every woman should have in her wardrobe as the go-to item of clothing when you’re in the mood to be casual. It never goes out of season and can be styled multiple ways. Worn at home or outside, the timelessness of a simple Tee can be paired with jeans, sweatpants, skirts and styled formally with blazers or informally with bomber jackets in the winter. You can also layer them up in the winter with jumpers and shirts or get yourself a T-Shirt dress. Under the recent change of work dynamics and the rise of Zoom work meetings and WFH (work from home) dressing can be done using oversized Tees that hit the comfort and professional checklist this spring. The best asset of a T-Shirt is that there are so many choices, from basic solid colours to graphic printed, simple logo and quotes to colour blocks – there are just so many styles to choose from that you can never have enough.
Bermuda Shorts
If you haven’t already, I would suggest you invest in a great stylish pair of bermuda shorts. A good pair will have you lounging the heat, now that summer has properly hit. I’ve styled my bermuda shorts with sweatshirts, jumpers, T-shirt, jersey and tunics. Zara, H&M and Nastygal have various styles of bermuda shorts available to shop online. They’ve come back this spring as WFH essentials and quite frankly they are perfect for dressing at home because they can be paired with a formal blazer for professional casual style.
Linen
Linen is the new cotton this spring season, and rightly so, because if you haven’t already then you should get yourself some linen for summer. The lightweight feel and the wafer thin cloth makes for the perfect summer shirt. Uniqlo has some of the best linen shirts for both men and women in many colours, sizes and shapes. They also have linen trousers for women, coats and shorts. There’s pretty much everything in linen in Uniqlo’s SS/20 collection. Line is really such a great way to bring casual style and comfort in your outfit because the minimalism aesthetics of linen clothing items can be dressed up or down at home or paired with prints to make it more fun and more summery. So if you discover any linen items of clothing when clearing out your wardrobe, make sure to keep them because the trend is back.
Jersey Tanks
Technically jersey tanks never go out of fashion, they’re timeless and you have to be living under a rock to now own one at some point. Rummaging through my wardrobe when I started spring cleaning last month during lockdown, I found around six of them which were living in the back of my drawer for months without seeing daylight. I now wear them almost everyday at home or a quick run to get groceries if the weather allows it. They are such a basic staple of a woman’s wardrobe that investing in jersey tanks rarely is a waste of money. Jersey tanks can be styled in so many ways that you could wear them for a month and still style them differently everyday and they are both dressed up and down according to your mood and needs.
